The Filipino Breakfast Habit We Need to Rethink

In many Filipino homes, breakfast can feel incomplete without something quick and familiar on the plate: hot dogs, corned beef, Spam, luncheon meat, ham, bacon, or sausages. They are easy to cook, tasty, and convenient, especially when everyone is rushing for work, school, or daily responsibilities.
But here is something worth pausing for:
Some of the foods we grew up loving may not be the foods our bodies want us to keep eating every day.
Processed meats are classified as Group 1 carcinogens, which means there is strong evidence linking them to cancer risk, especially when eaten often over time. These include meats preserved through curing, smoking, salting, or chemical processing, foods that are very common in Filipino kitchens.
This is not about fear.
This is about awareness.

Because the truth is, health is not only affected by what we eat during special occasions. It is shaped by the small choices we repeat every morning, at every lunch, with every baon, and in every quick meal.
The good news? You do not need to change everything overnight.
Start small. Eat processed meats less often. Add more real food to your plate: vegetables, fruits, beans, tofu, fish, eggs, munggo, sweet potatoes, and whole foods that nourish your body better.
Inspired by Japan and other Blue Zones, healthier living is not about strict dieting. It is about choosing simple, life-giving foods more often. More color. More plants. More balance. More meals, your future self will thank you for.
So the next time you prepare breakfast, ask yourself:
Is this just convenient for today, or is it also kind to the future me?
A healthier life does not always begin with a big decision.
Sometimes, it begins with one better plate.
Eat processed meats less often. Choose whole foods more often. Live better, one meal at a time.
