10 Cheap Filipino Foods That Can Help You Live Longer

By Ninko Ocampo Pangilinan

One of the biggest myths I hear is that eating healthy is too expensive.

It doesn't have to be.

Some of the healthiest foods in the Philippines are also some of the cheapest. You don't need imported "superfoods" or expensive supplements to improve your health. Many of the foods our grandparents grew up eating are still available in local palengkes and grocery stores today.

Here are my top 10 affordable Filipino longevity foods.

1. Monggo (Mung Beans)

One of the healthiest foods you can buy.

Monggo is packed with plant protein, fiber, iron, folate, and potassium. It's filling, affordable, and great for your heart and gut.

Longevity Tip: Add more vegetables and go easy on processed meats when cooking monggo.

2. Malunggay (Moringa)

Malunggay is one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the world.

It's rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, antioxidants, and fiber.

Add it to soups, eggs, tinola, or enjoy it as tea.

3. Kamote (Sweet Potato)

Kamote has been eaten in the Philippines for generations.

It's rich in fiber, vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants while keeping you fuller than many processed snacks.

Steam, boil, or bake it instead of frying.

4. Kangkong

Affordable and found almost everywhere, kangkong is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Try steaming or lightly sautéing it with garlic instead of deep-frying.

5. Pechay

Pechay is inexpensive, easy to cook, and packed with nutrients that support healthy bones, eyes, and your immune system.

It's an easy way to add more vegetables to any meal.

6. Sardines

Whether fresh or canned, sardines are one of the most affordable sources of protein and omega-3 fats.

They're a much better everyday choice than many processed meats.

7. Eggs

Eggs remain one of the best value foods available.

They're rich in high-quality protein and help maintain muscle as you age.

8. Papaya

Papaya grows throughout the Philippines and is naturally high in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.

It's a healthier way to satisfy your sweet tooth than sugary desserts.

9. Bananas (Saging)

Bananas are inexpensive, filling, and full of potassium.

They're perfect as a snack before a walk, after exercise, or with breakfast.

10. Coconut (Buko)

Fresh buko water is a refreshing way to stay hydrated in the tropical heat, while fresh coconut meat contains fiber and healthy fats.

Choose fresh coconut over sugary soft drinks whenever you can.

A Few Foods to Eat Less Often

Living longer isn't only about what you eat more of—it's also about what you eat less of.

Try cutting back on:

  • Sugary soft drinks

  • Processed meats like hotdogs and longganisa

  • Instant noodles

  • Deep-fried fast food

  • Too many sugary desserts

These foods are fine occasionally, but they shouldn't make up most of your diet.

Final Thoughts

The Philippines already has many of the foods needed for a long, healthy life.

You don't need imported health foods or expensive supplements.

Shop at your local palengke.

Eat more plants.

Choose real food more often.

Simple habits, repeated every day, can change your future.

Make longevity a lifestyle.
